Architect Insight | May 2019

We talk all things Architecture & Construction with Herarn Perera, Project Architect - DWA Architects.

Tell us a bit about your firm:

We are a small firm currently based in Joondalup. We specialise in Educational Architecture, and work very closely with our clients to create unique, tailored solutions to specific and sometimes entangled problems. We have worked on schools, TAFE’s ranging from public to private, metro to regional.

What is a highlight of your career?

Designing and documenting (from inception to completion) an Education Support program for a local high school which created and altered several specialised classrooms and outdoor areas across the campus to cater to students with various physical and mental learning needs.

Where do you get your inspiration?

I’m a big fan of following other local and Australian designers. I’ve never been awed by international ‘starchitects’ when there are plenty of clever and innovative artists right here. Continually doing site tours and viewing other architect’s works keep you thinking!

What’s hot in Architecture this year?

Climate change is what’s hot! Hopefully we are seeing a lean towards making our new buildings as sustainable as possible. I think it is becoming more seamless and built-in.

What’s your favourite product/finish?

Washed aggregate concrete. Neat, sprawling, low maintenance, enduring. But after Canning Vale College I’m also enjoying the concrete blockwork, and starting to slowly understand Iwan Iwanoff’s love affair…

When you are not at work, what keeps you busy?

To be honest, I probably spend a fair bit of time drinking and eating with friends and family. Occasionally some running and gardening. Perth still has many exciting new venues and locations to discover.

What do you see for the WA Construction future?

Seeing a slow wind of change in the industry with some mining work picking up, which will eventually trickle down. The State Government is pushing full-steam ahead with its public transport agenda, and perhaps there may be some sweeteners from the Federal Government at the election.

What’s on the horizon for you and your company?

We will have a few ecclesiastical buildings coming to fruition by the end of the year, and a new Sports Hall centre in the Wanneroo area taking shape!
