Architect Insight | September 2019
We talk all things Architecture & Construction with Simone Robeson, Owner and Principal Architect - Robeson Architects.
Tell us a bit about your firm:
We are a tiny firm working out of a very fun shared office in West Leederville. We focus on residential projects but occasionally do a hospitality project. We take on a limited amount of houses each year and would like to keep the focus on ‘less but better’.
What is a highlight of your career?
Winning a Commendation Award at the Australian Institute of Architecture WA Awards for my first ‘proper’ project. Built by BE Projects of course!
Where do you get your inspiration?
The site, the brief, the client – very token responses but a good house needs to respond very well to the basics. Aesthetically, and personally, I love clever little Japanese houses.
What’s hot in Architecture this year?
Nothing hopefully. The less ‘on trend’ designs we need to build the better! As nice as it is to say good architecture should be timeless, the reality is that certain materials and finishes come into fashion, like any creative industry. Arched windows seem to be having a moment right now.
What’s your favourite product/finish?
Right now I’m loving this raked organic rendered texture system for walls.
When you are not at work, what keeps you busy?
Beach runs and dips, and hanging at my bar King Somm (shameless plug).
What do you see for the WA Construction future?
More bricks probably.
What’s on the horizon for you and your company?
Designing a house in Monte Carlo for Daniel Ricciardo, and a boutique hotel in the Lower East Side for, I don’t know, Kendrick Lamar. Should those fall through, we plan on sticking to what we know and love, designing houses and constantly striving to do it better year upon year!
